I can’t remember the last time I was without a sketchbook or paintbrush within reach.

I was always the artsy kid lost in her sketches with pencils, paints, and markers scattered about. I was the introspective one for whom a pencil and paper provided hours of entertainment.

Hello, I’m Michele Poirier Mozzone.

I’m a painter captivated by the effects of water and sunlight on the figure.

The human form has fascinated me forever. Through this endless well of inspiration, I’ve been able to not only refine my artistic skills but also, to explore universal and self-reflective themes.

I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA. I worked in watercolor after college. I still delight in the translucence and the inherent beauty of this medium. With time, I wanted a new challenge and decided to take workshops in pastel. I quickly came to appreciate the medium’s expressiveness and immediacy. When it was time for my work to grow in scale, I discovered oils were much more suitable, not only in terms of coverage, but also in texture, richness, and depth of color.

For the past 13 years, I’ve been able to carve out the time and space to focus intensely on my work.

One exceptionally beautiful afternoon at the pool in 2011, I was struck by the ribbons of sunlight and interesting distortions affecting my daughter through the moving water. I was also keenly aware of catching this lovely, brief moment with her before it flickered by. I grabbed my camera and took numerous photos of her in the water in hopes of finding inspiration for a new painting.

That was the beginning of the Fractured Light series, an exploration that still fascinates me today.

These days you’ll find me in my home studio still surrounded by art supplies, and getting lost capturing the human figure in sunlight-drenched water.
